    Jay Saunders, director of the University of North Texas' flagship ensemble, the One O'Clock Lab Band, sums up the group's latest recording, Lab , in one concise and canny sentence: "Sometimes it's best just to let the band play what they want to play." With that in mind, Saunders writes in the album's liner notes, he "threw the keys" to the band, its arrangers and composers .

    The One O’Clock Lab Band’s tradition of excellence continued under Steve Wiest (’08–’14) and Jay Saunders (’14–’16), and is now under the skillful leadership of Alan Baylock. The UNT jazz faculty, chaired by Rob Parton, is the foundation of the North Texas jazz studies division.
