That will tell you if you have lost the chassis ground wire because it should clear up the buzzing. This is a "quick'n'dirty solution that will give you a ground connection for the chassis of turntable to the chassis of the amp.

Installing light fixtures that have no ground wire is something that can be done by yourself. But check will all local building codes, because it may require a rewiring of your home to bring it up to date. Consider wiring the light yourself to save money on an electrician, .

Dec 17,  · You can add a ground wire to your electrical box in the ceiling for an extra measure of safety when replacing a ceiling light. Disconnect your lighting circuit at the main service panel.

In the event that the live wire comes loose and touches the light fixture, the ground wire diverts the power and blows the breaker, instead of you feeling an electrical shock when you touch the fixture. That’s the only purpose the ground wire serves. It’s a safety.

The ground wire must go back to the same panel as the conductors come out of (that's relevant if you have more than one panel). The ground wires MUST be thick enough (generally as thick as the conductors) and can be thicker -- for instance a 12 AWG ground wire is not acceptable for a 10 AWG/30A dryer circuit, but it is acceptable for a 14 AWG.

Seems like a discussion has split from the original question to where the equipment grounding conductor carries current back to when a dead short appears. In my opinion both cajon ken and John Nelson is partially right.

Feb 22,  · I need to extend the relatively short original ground wire on my Dual turntable so that it can reach the ground post on my receiver. I dug up a strand of thin ( or gauge) speaker wire of suitable length that already has a spade lug at one end and was wondering if there is any compelling reason not to use it.
